The Local Organizing Committee of the 31st General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission, to be held in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece, from 7 to 12 September 2008, announces that before the Assembly a Young Seismologist Training Course (YSTC) will take place in Chania, Crete, on September 2-7, 2008.
A. Description
- Topic: Active Tectonics and Seismicity. The YSTC will include lectures on plate tectonics and seismotectonics, with emphasis on the Eastern Mediterranean Sea; lectures on seismological and geophysical methodologies and techniques for the determination of active seismogenic structures; complemented with practical computer exercises and field surveys.
- Time schedule: 2-7 September 2008. Arrival on Tuesday, 2 September 2008, and departure on Sunday, 7 September 2008. Transportation from Chania to Hersonissos will be provided on Sunday, 7 September 2008, for those who plan to attend the ESC2008 General Assembly.
- Daily program: About 6-7 working hours per day.
- Host Institute: Laboratory of Geophysics & Seismology, Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Crete, Chania, in collaboration with the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens (NOA), and the ESC2008 LOC.
- Lecturers: from TEI and NOA.
- Number of trainees: 20-25.
- Cost of the YSTC: There is no registration fee to attend the Course.
- Accommodation and meals: Accommodation will be scheduled in a hotel located at walking distance from the YSTC venue. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided in the student restaurant of the host institute.
- Financial support: Limited funds are available from IASPEI (the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior) and ESC, to cover full or partially local expenses and/or travel cost. For those who plan to attend the ESC General Assembly the registration fee also will be covered.
B. Selection of trainees
The selection of trainees will be made by the ESC2008 LOC on the basis of the next criteria:
- Age: There is no age limitation for the participants, but priority will be given to candidates under 35.
- Academic status: at least graduate degree holders, preferably MSC or PhD.
- Nationality: High priority will be given to candidates from non-EU countries.
- Previous support: Priority will be given to candidates that did not attend previous YSTC.
